All About Backgammon History – Tales from the Past

When we take a look into Backgammon History, one might be surprised to find that this addictive game was played centuries ago by different cultures. It is extremely difficult for one to come up with an exact date as to when this game was first played but it is safe to say that backgammon was discovered centuries ago.

Various versions of this game have been found in Egypt during 3000-1788BC. These gaming boards consisted of 30 squares and hence was known as the “game of thirty squares”. It seems that each country has its own backgammon history. Roman civilisation has evidence that a game called “Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum” originated in 600 AD. It is said that the Romans brought this game to Britain during the 1st century. Here the game was referred to as “tabula” and it was played as a sport but also for money.

Soon there were thousands of people playing the game and a tabula spirit or a spirit of gambling swept over the land, leaving people addicted to this game. It wasn’t long before this game swept into the Asian continent during 800 AD. In South-West Asia it was known as Nard and a pretty similar version to this game was played in China under the name of “T’shu-p’u”

When we go back and look at backgammon history, we find that it is indeed amazing to see how much the game has evolved. Today, it is digitised and can be played online by people from different parts of the world.
